The idea of a craft that sinks under the water goes back to its roots in antiquity. Middle-century thinkers also actively tried to create an underwater transport system, the basis of which would turn the bottom upside down. At the end of the 19th century, submarines with an electric power plant appeared, and then with a gasoline or diesel engine for surface navigation and an electric one for underwater navigation. As a result, at the beginning of the 20th century, submarine ships began to be introduced into the military-naval forces of most of the continental regions of the world.
